Pain is an uncomfortable feeling and/or an unpleasant sensation in the body. The presence of pain often is an indication that something is wrong. Pain can appear suddenly or can come about slowly.
Acute and chronic pain is why most people go to chiropractors and become patients. Acute pain usually occurs because of a recent injury to a neck, back, shoulder, or ankle. The pain is sudden, sharp, intense, debilitating, and lasts for a short time. Treatment for acute injuries may only last for 2 to 6 weeks before the pain and spasm resolves and your activities return back to normal and the patient is released from care. Acute pain disappears when the underlying cause of pain has been treated or has healed. Unrelieved or untreated acute pain, however, might lead to chronic pain.
Chronic pain persists despite the fact that the injury has healed. Pain signals remain active in the nervous system for months or years. Physical effects include tense muscles, limited mobility, a lack of energy, and changes in appetite. Emotional effects include depression, anger, anxiety, and fear of re-injury. Such a fear might hinder a person’s ability to return to normal work or leisure activities. This could be due to arthritis, degenerative joint issues, scar tissue build-up in the muscles, fibromyalgia, etc. Chronic pain patients may receive treatment over a long period of time as management of their symptoms lies in reducing pain and symptoms. In most cases chronic pain cannot be cured but it can be managed and controlled by the use of chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic modalities such as ultrasound, massage, myofascial release, electric muscle stimulation, cold laser treatments, passive and active stretching and exercises. And here is the good news; by utilizing chiropractic which relieves pain by taking pressure off the joints and muscles, this treatment is safe, natural, effective, and drug free. That is a huge benefit.
